Michael Bascomb

The Wealden Consort is delighted to welcome Michael Bascomb as Musical Director, with effect from April 2024.

Michael is a British composer, conductor, performer and producer. He holds a BA in Music from Cambridge University and an MA in Opera Making on a scholarship at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in association with the Royal Opera House. Following two years working with a number of choirs and orchestras in Madrid, he is now based in Tunbridge Wells where, in addition to his conducting and musical directorship engagements, he assists with the Tunbridge Wells International Music Festival, as well as the town's Fringe Festival which he helped to found.

A noted composer for stage and film, Michael scored the music for Echo of Everything, a documentary exploring the Spanish concept of duende in music which premiered in Toronto in 2023. He has written and produced several shows, including Cathy: A Retelling of Wuthering Heights  at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He has also performed as a singer and pianist across the UK and abroad, in major venues including the Barbican Centre in London and the National Auditorium in Madrid.

Michael's arrival marks an exciting new chapter in the history of The Wealden Consort; we are looking forward to singing under his direction, and to expanding our repertoire under his guidance.
